Green Lantern First Gay Comic Book Superhero?

Green Lantern the First Gay Comic Book Superhero?

After several years of embarking upon super villains as a typical man turned savior, DC Comic’s magical superhero Green Lantern, one of the publisher’s most established and oldest characters, has come out as openly gay. The development is in the portion of the 2nd issue of Earth 2 and moves on the heels of what had been an extensive year for lesbian and gay characters in the comic book from Marvel to Archie and others.

The Green Lantern is not just the emerald-clad Earth defender and one of the members of the Justice League who made history with both triumph and catastrophe. Instead, according to the writer of this brand new series, James Robinson, he stated that this Alan Scott story is the untold version of the common Lantern who originated in July 1940 in All-American Comics #16.

The changes are part of the editor’s exploration of a new fictional universe. The past few years have seen a resurgence of interest comic book characters, most notably on the big screen. Iron Man, Thor, The Hulk, Captain America as well as a new Spider-Man movie and the upcoming conclusion to The Dark Knight trilogy reboot. Even these followed three X-Men movies (to mixed reviews).

While last year’s Green Lantern movie was not the success its producers (and fans) had hoped it to be, it still brought the DC character back into the public eye, albeit without the hero being gay. He still had his girlfriend Carol along with him for the ride, staying true to the common origin story most fans are familiar with, with a modern update.

How has this event shaped the comic world? Was it only a matter of time? Is it a sign of the more socially accepted time we live in today? Or was it merely a ploy by the publishers to revive a stagnant industry? After all, it’s not the paperback comics many of us grew up with that are the industry’s current cash cow. Perhaps this, while relevant to modern society, was a little shot in the arm of the comic world. Maybe more of the same is waiting down the road.

What do you think?

Abin Sur Up Close

So last week I was in LA and took the Warner Brothers studio tour. We saw lots of cool stuff – the piano from Casablanca, cars from Gran Torino, Austin Powers, Get Smart, Batman and other flicks, and the back alley where Spider Man’s upside down kiss with Mary Jane was filmed. And it just so happened that a certain Green Lantern Corps member was tucked away in the corner. I thought I’d post the photo here. Enjoy!

Green Lantern Oath

The Green Lantern is one of the most highly respected and celebrated superheroes of our time and is also one of the most widely known all across the world. If you are a fan of this DC comic book superhero, then you know the strong importance of the oath to this character. The oath is something that the Green Lantern says every time that he charges up his power ring, and is usually different for each and every Green Lantern character in the comic book universe. One of the most popular oaths is as follows:

“In brightest day, in blackest night, No evil shall escape my sight.
Let those who worship evil’s might, Beware my power… Green Lantern’s light!

This is the one that the majority of us GL fans are familiar with. There are also a few others that are extremely well known, but this is the one that most diehard fans can recite by heart. This oath was revised from the original one that appeared in the earlier comic books and continues to live on as one of the most famous quotes in all of DC Comics!

Each member of the Green Lantern Corps has his own unique oath, yet the purpose is the same – to give him the strength and will that he needs to serve the world with justice and to save it from a multitude of different evils time and time again. The oath is something that each Green Lantern says to himself and is a sort of a daily affirmation that lets him know that he is strong and courageous enough to go out and fight the good fight! The oath is the inner fire that brings forth the power to let justice prevail, not just over Earth but across countless galaxies throughout the universe. The legend of the Green Lantern is widely known all across the world and will always be one of the most influential superheroes of all time.

Ryan Reynolds – Green Lantern Movie

Are you as excited as I am for this summer’s blockbuster Green Lantern movie?? June 17 – get here NOW! Unless you’ve been living under a rock, Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds is taking on the role of test pilot turned galactic protector Hal Jordan, the most popular of the Green Lanterns in the comic universe. Personally, I think Reynolds is a good casting call – he seems to fit the vibe of the character and he’s popular with today’s audiences. And with an estimated $150 million budget, I hope Warner Bros. chose wisely! I think when Reynolds first speaks the famous Green Lantern Oath, audiences nationwide will erupt….

While the storyline of the movie is still somewhat guarded, the basic premise is that Hal Jordan is recruited to be the first human in the Green Lantern Corps and is to fight Parallax in an attempt to save the known universe. Blake Lively (love that name) stars as Carol Ferris, childhood sweetheart of Hal. However, my early opinion is that it’s the charm and wit of Reynolds along with the expected dazzling green special effects that will make this one of the must-see movies of the 2011 summer. Check out the latest trailer.

Of course, this has franchise written all over it. The third Batman movie is expected out next year, there are the Thor and Captain America movies also due out later this summer as part of the large Avengers project, and there’s even talk of yet another Superman reboot. A Nick Fury movie is also in the works, from what I hear. Apparently we still love our comic heroes. Let’s just hope Reynolds and accomplished director Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, Goldeneye, The Mask of Zorro) can keep the magic of the Green Lantern alive.
